Vexel gallery?  What?  Wait, we don't have a vexel gallery. Well, we will soon and that's why I'm writing this news article.

Over the next few weeks I am going to start to put together all the subgalleries for a proper vexel gallery. Yes, that means we will officially have a legitimate vexel gallery of its own. This new gallery will be in the digital gallery section in a place of its own, just like vector has its own area. Before we do that, all the categories have to be hammered out and sifted through to see which ones are needed and which ones we can live without.

First off, if you're not completely sure what a vexel image is, read this vexel description. After digging around on the net, that's a great source of information about the medium. Hats off for such a clear and easy to understand definition.

This is going to be completely new so how the other digital galleries are set up are not important. Subgalleries for the other sections might not be appropriate for a vexel section so let's start from scratch.

A minimum collection of galleries might include:

1.  People
2.  Animals
3.  Vehicles
4.  Abstract
5.  Scenery
6.  Fanart
7.  Open Format (for images that don't exactly fit in the other galleries)

The goal is to create enough diversity so all vexel art can be submitted properly, but, not so wide spread that it is difficult to maintain. In other words, keep is simple, keep it clean.

Now's your turn, let me know what you want. Not promising to use every idea but the great ones will be put in place. When you make a suggestion, think what it would be like if you had to police it. Is it too close to another subgallery, not really going to get much art posted to it, too difficult to figure out what it means? Let us together create something that we all can be proud of and enjoy browsing every day.

If you want to help, speak your opinions politely, pass the word, and fave this article so it shows up in the popular page. The more people know about this, the better it can be.

great, this makes everything easier!

what about a mixed media vexel section? when mixing vexel with photos or drawings
Aeires Featured By Owner Dec 17, 2006
A dedicated mixed media gallery is planned but will be its own section to include all the digital types. It's another project so probably won't be included in this one. :)

I'm both excited and kind of dreading it :P
I really think there needs to be *somewhere* for the non-vector vexels to go and it will be great to have.
It's just the whole definition thing that is so confusing. Are you still going ahead with the rule that if it was made in Photoshop (even with 100% vector tools) it will not belong in the vector category? I can just see that pissing people off. I personally wouldn't care, but I know people are so picky about that kind of thing :|
I will be glad that there will be a little more confirmation on a definition though - a definition (however it turns out) that has clear, concise guidelines and rules. A certain "this is a vexel" and "this is not a vexel".
This whole thing will be very interesting (well ... for me, since I have so much trouble with and it's definition & rules).
No doubt people will whinge no matter what you do but it is definitely needed and will be very appreciated :D

Well, a fundamental question to ask is, if you make an image in photoshop that looks completely vector, how is anyone other than you going to know? To the best of my knowledge there isn't a single digital gallery dedicated to a software program and I'm not about to start one. I'm going to try and make the focus the image itself, not necessarily getting bogged down with "what program..." arguements. In other words, does the image contain such and such elements?

Hope that helps.

I think a fantasy gallery ought to be in order. I've only done one vexel to date, but it'd be a lot more comfortable in "fantasy" than "people" or "open format."

I do also agree with ~Tellaine about the digital mixed media idea, though. It's entirely possible for an image to be both a photomanipulation and a digital painting, or a drawing and 3-dimensional, etc., and it only seems fair that if traditional art has a mixed media gallery, so should digital art.

Mixed media is a totally different animal and will be coming soon, hopefully (lot of work). :)

That's good to know. :) I admit, I have no idea what goes into making a gallery, but I definitely believe that it takes a lot of work.

So, what's the ETA on the vexel gallery?
Aeires Featured By Owner Dec 18, 2006
It's a lot of work, or can be in this case. You have to figure out exactly how to describe the main gallery, then see if it needs any subgalleries, and describe those too. In this case it's difficult because there are so many opinions on what is and what is not a vexel. Then moving all the art that is posted that should be in the newer section, as well as screaming it exists everywhere you can think of so people know about it. :D

This will be sent in hopefully before Christmas. If I can get it all nailed together by friday I'd be happy. New Years at the absolute latest.

I had no idea that it entailed all that. I've got more respect for people who maintain the galleries here now.

Keep up the good work! I'm eagerly awaiting the new gallery. :D
